Why this matters

A manager is often the person helping coordinate the whole career rather than one narrow function. That can mean strategy, team communication, opportunities, priorities, business decisions, and keeping many moving pieces aligned.

01

Understand

Start with what the concept means and why it shows up.

02

Work It Through

Move through the practical decisions, tradeoffs, and moving parts.

03

Ask Better Questions

Use the prompts to catch assumptions before they become expensive.

04

Take It With You

Finish with a checklist you can use outside the page.

01

Define the bottleneck

Is the artist losing opportunities because nobody owns follow-up? Is strategy fragmented? Are team members operating independently? Is the artist spending more time managing the business than creating and performing? Those are more useful signals than simply “we are ready for a manager.”

02

Define scope and authority

Clarify which career areas are included, where the manager can negotiate or commit, which decisions require approval, and whether non-music opportunities are inside the commission scope.

03

Understand commissionable income

Management agreements can differ materially on rate, calculations, exclusions, expenses, post-term commission, territory, and term. There is no universal management deal.

04

Treat the relationship like a partnership with documentation

Compatibility matters, but a written agreement protects both parties when memories differ or the relationship ends. Qualified legal review is appropriate for binding management agreements.
