Why this matters

A stream is not a tiny cash payment sent directly to the person whose name is on the artist profile. Multiple rights can be involved, and services generally pay rights holders who then pay creators according to their agreements.

01

Understand

Start with what the concept means and why it shows up.

02

Work It Through

Move through the practical decisions, tradeoffs, and moving parts.

03

Ask Better Questions

Use the prompts to catch assumptions before they become expensive.

04

Take It With You

Finish with a checklist you can use outside the page.

01

There is no universal per-stream paycheck

Spotify explicitly describes its model as streamshare rather than a fixed per-stream rate. Apple likewise describes streaming as stream-share based even though it has published historical average per-play figures for certain plans.

02

Master-side money

pay the applicable recording rights holder or intermediary. What reaches the artist depends on ownership and agreements with labels, distributors, producers, collaborators, or other participants.

03

Composition-side money

Interactive streams can also generate -related for the underlying composition. In the United States, The MLC administers eligible blanket-license digital mechanical royalties, while performance rights organizations handle applicable composition public-performance royalties.

04

Different services can use different economics

Subscription mix, ad-supported listening, geography, product structure, rights terms, and models differ. SoundCloud, for example, offers fan-powered royalties for eligible directly monetized artists. Comparing one headline “rate” without context can mislead.

05

Use streaming as both revenue and discovery

For independent artists, streaming can create revenue, listener data, discovery, catalog longevity, and conversion into tickets, merch, direct sales, and fan relationships. Measure the downstream behavior, not just stream count.
